Edgefield Primary School is on a mission to combat food waste generated in our canteen. Our solution revolves around repurposing leftover food through composting to nourish the school’s edible garden. However, a significant challenge emerged: Our canteen staff are not consistently separating the leftover food items correctly.

To overcome this challenge, our team is proposing to harness the potential of artificial intelligence. We seek to solve the challenge by creating a prototype machine equipped with A.I. recognition capabilities. This A.I.-enhanced device will assist in pinpointing the types of leftover food items and guide our school mates to deposit their food into the appropriate bins. All of us, at Edgefield Primary School, are committed to build a sustainable future through proper plastic recycling efforts. However, effective plastic recycling relies on proper sorting and freedom from contamination. Contamination, often caused by food or liquid residue, hinders recycling efforts.

Despite educating school mates the correct plastic preparation methods, they often forget or do not follow, leading to disruption in the recycling chain. To address this issue, we propose creating a prototype machine that utilizes torch lights and light sensors to detect foreign matter.

By shining light through a plastic bottle, the machine’s sensors can detect contamination. Light readings vary when foreign matter is present, allowing it to determine contamination. Contamination is identified when light readings fall below the standard lux. This technology is cost effective and offers a promising solution to ensure clean plastic materials enter recycling bins, contributing to enhanced environmental sustainability.

People with dementia tend to forget where they are or live if they go out for extended periods of time. This is dangerous as they might be outside but have no idea how to get home without help or even get into an accident.

We have designed a camera surveillance system at the door that uses facial recognition to identify a dementia patient if he tries to leave home on his own. The caregiver will be notified when this happens and then decides if he allows the patient to leave the residence by unlocking the door remotely via a phone app.

Bubble tea can be a sinfully tasty beverage. Consumers of bubble tea tend to drink it a lot so it could lead to health issues such as diabetes.

Around 1 in 9 Singaporeans have diabetes. It has become a serious concern as diabetes can and will lead to a plethora of serious conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, kidney failures, blindness, amputations or even death if it is not controlled.

We have designed a Bubble Tea Sugar Reminder device to be placed at the stall counter. When the seller places the cup on it, an advisory will be displayed to the customer when taking the cup of bubble tea. The advisory will gently remind the consumer how sweet the drink is and what is the recommended frequency of consuming it.

Hence when the lid is tilted, the water may spill onto the countertop/floor if the user is not fast enough to rotate the lid. An all-in-one whiteboard accessory that includes markers and magnets on a magnetic duster with a cover, allows teachers easy access to commonly used items while in class. With its magnetic cover, teachers can conveniently bring the duster from class to class without worrying about dirtying their bags. There would also be fewer incidents of time being wasted hunting for misplaced markers or dusters while in class. With sustainability in mind, we have also designed the duster cloth to be easily removable and replaceable, without the need to discard the entire duster when it gets too dirty.

The NEA has implemented recycling (blue) bins in neighbourhoods but many recycling bins were contaminated by trash such as food waste resulting in a poor or low successful recycling rate from the “Blue Bins” in Singapore (around 22%). A lot of effort and money has been put in to promote recycling in Singapore. Still, recycling is not done correctly. Why is this so? Perhaps not much effort has been put into finding the population’s needs and wants. It is assumed that the population knows what can be recycled, knows how to recycle properly and are motivated to do so. Sadly, the statistics reflect that this may not the case. We decided to create a Card Game to teach the younger generation (Primary and Secondary school students) on how to recycle properly.

The proposed project aims to increase the recycling rate in the classroom. Green leaders in the classroom will bring the recyclables to the recycling station in the school. They will show the recyclables in front of the camera. An alert will be used to inform the student if the item is not a recyclable and positive message used if the student has done it right. The data collected from the camera will be used to track the recycling behaviour of classes. The real time feedback helps to motivate students to recycle and the data collect helps the school to identify the area to work on to increase awareness of recycling.

The proposed project aims to make use of artificial technology to help to increase awareness among primary school students of what materials are suitable to be recycled and how to recycle right. During recess, a Quarky robot will be programmed to move around in the canteen to engage students on recycling. A survey showed that most students spend a long time queuing at the bookshop only to find out that the books they need are out of stock. This proposal introduces a touch sensor on the bookshelves, that will be activated when the last book on the shelf is being removed. This leads to paying for single-use ones at shops or buying additional reusable bags. Thus, we designed Pocketz to resolve this issue. Pocketz is a reusable bag that acts as a pocket. It is attachable to your clothes, making the reusable bag more convenient to use and something people would be unlikely to forget to bring with them.

Food wastage is a serious issue not only in Singapore, but around the world. Our mobile application is designed to help reduce wastage of expired food. Our app works by allowing users to input the expiry dates of purchased food with a quick camera snapshot. It will send reminders nearing the expiry date recorded and provide recommendations on how users can consume the food, e.g. recipes. There is also a chat function that allows users to exchange or give away food items to others. We hope to expand the use of this app to collaborate with major retailers to give away or sell items that are close to expiry or are deemed "ugly" at discounted rates.

The problem of loneliness among the elderly is growing. Out of the four people we have interviewed in Chua Chu Kang community, three highlighted that sometimes they experience loneliness as they do not have a lot of people they can connect with. Having realised that the use of plastic is very high for food delivery services, we eventually came up with a problem statement that involves working adults who would like to start recycling food delivery packaging in order to save the environment. Therefore, we created a prototype which enables the user to store and dry their plastic food packages using drying racks on the lid as well as adjustable velcro separators to allow for ease of storage of items of various sizes. Our prototype also includes wheels that can be flipped up for easy storage. This prototype would help to teach the users the correct way to recycle and at the same time make recycling more fun and convenient for the user.

Project Incandescence is an initiative dedicated to improving the mental wellbeing of the future Secondary 1 students. A survey on the current mental health of Dunman students reveal the top 2 sources of stress being uncertainty about the future and being overwhelmed by school work. Taking stock of the current school support and further refining students’ needs, we prototype a programme that aims to strengthen students’ decision-making skills, through platforms to connect and share between selected Sec 3 Seniors and Sec 1 students. Sec 1 students will be given choices to buddy up with Seniors, go through sessions that progressively impart skills through activities and sharing of experiences, and importantly forge relationships that would serve as relational assets to them in future challenges. Additionally, this project will also strengthen the peer support network in school and enhance the culture of care among Dunmanites.

Researchers found that youth who are poor at expressing their negative emotions are more susceptible to depressive symptoms following stressful life events. Conversely, those who are better at expressing their emotions have shown a reduction in negative emotions escalating into a clinical depression over time. Journaling has also been proven to be a helpful tool in managing mental health. Research has shown that journaling helps manage anxiety, depression and stress. Seniors with chronic illnesses would normally be prescribed with medications that they will need to take regularly. Sometimes there are simply too many different types of medications to be taken at different times, leading to confusion and forgetfulness. Our design informs seniors when they need to take their prescribed medications and send out reminders through fun emojis on a display to encourage them to take their medications on time. Through regular medication administration, seniors will then be able to sustain their physical wellness and enjoy their golden years in good health.

The problem faced by persons with visual and hearing impairment is the lack of access to information in social areas such as park connectors. There is a risk of cyclists injuring persons with disabilities (PWDs) at the park as there are very limited verbal and auditory interaction between them in the park. Our group created “Optio,” a story-oriented game for Primary Schoolers to promote eco-friendly living. It demonstrates simple ways to contribute to environmental sustainability, showing that small efforts can have a big impact through cute animal characters in the game. The game spans 3 days in-game, with 4-6 choices the player can take each day, providing players with easy and sustainable choices. (Eg. taking public transport vs cycling) Each action will then lead to a different outcome, such as interesting dialogue or minigames. At the end of the game, it displays the player’s saved water, reduced carbon emissions, and generated waste, and what this number is in relation to. (Eg. amount of water saved can fill how many bathtubs) A sweet message would be shown at the end of the game, encouraging people to reduce their carbon footprint. “Optio” is an engaging, easy-to-play game that fosters an environmentally friendly mindset.

Our project addresses a pressing issue within our school environment — the inconsistent availability of toilet paper in restrooms, leading to student stress and restroom vandalism. Our mission is to ensure a stress-free and hygienic restroom experience for students, promoting workplace wellness.

To achieve this, we propose the implementation of an innovative automated toilet paper dispensing system. This system dispenses an optimal 7 squares of toilet paper per use, reducing waste while ensuring adequacy. To enhance accountability and resource management, users will need to identify themselves via an Ez link card or their unique student MIMS account.

This identification mechanism not only tracks paper consumption but also acts as a deterrent against misuse. Students can report restroom conditions, facilitating timely maintenance and investigations. Our project aligns with the school's goal of fostering a supportive and stress-free atmosphere for learning. It not only improves restroom wellness but also contributes to a sustainable school ecosystem. Ultimately, it empowers students and teachers alike, making our school a better place for everyone.

Mental wellness is a concern for us with the pressures that teenagers are going through in school and their social life. As many turn to harmful ways of escape like substance abuse (e.g vaping, drinking and smoking) and habits form, it becomes difficult to break from these chains that bind them. Our app (Spark Life) aims to do that through a fun and gamified interface that inspires users to Substitute their addictions, get or give Support and Heal. Spark Life is a forgiving app and knows the road to being addiction free is a journey and not simply a destination and it gives support to users all the way.

Based on the survey we conducted, we realised that many students have lost their valuables in school before including their Personal Learning Devices (PLDs). Our product solves this problem. In school, students encounter tremendous amounts of stress which could come from teachers, peers and their own expectations. If this stress is bottled up and contained for long periods, it may result in meltdowns and lowered self-esteem. We are proposing a solution to combat this problem. The Anti-Stress Sanctuary is a specially designed space that incoporates innovative technology with the aim of customising a personalised and soothing anti-stress experience for users.

Our aim is to create an app to aid caregivers of dementia patients in managing daily tasks so as to track basic parameters and to enhance effectiveness in serving their patients or loved ones. Our current prototype focusses primarily on capturing certain essential aspects of patient’s health, such as heart rate, and well-being as well as storage of relevant related information such as medication reminders. We hope to overcome some of the routine challenges by applying technology-enabled solutions to provide support in reducing psychological stress and relief from burnout. Studies have indicated that caregivers commonly experience physical and/or mental deterioration due to the many and varied demands driven by dementia. Thus, the use of ‘MemoRise’ could improve the quality of life for both caregivers and patients.

We created a device to reduce the number of road kills in Singapore, especially endangered species like pangolins and Sambar deers, while also reducing the number of common road kills like wild boars. We used microbit to code the device and used infrared and regular cameras to detect the animals. Upon detection, the device emits a frequency only audible to the animals. This frequency will scare the animals away and prevent them from coming onto the road. As an added precaution, we have signboards with LED lights that will alert drivers to slow down upon detection of an animal. A notification will be sent through a navigation app such as google maps to alert drivers to slow down, should they not see the signboard.

The proposed solution involves the creation of a specialized keychain that is given by parents to their children and attached to the students’ pencil cases. This keychain will serve as a source of mental support during exams. When the students look at the keychain, it will remind them to take deep breaths and stay calm during the challenging exam moments. Simultaneously, parents who purchase and provide these keychains will be reminded of their child’s hard work and the difficulties they face in their educational journey.

The project focuses on food wastage in SJI. Students usually throw away their food as they are unable to finish what the canteen vendors have given them. The design solution is a food composter that will turn the food waste into fertilizers using the vermicomposting method.

Singapore is facing an imminent crisis — an ageing population. With many elderly requiring assistance for day-to-day activities, completing tasks on their own may be difficult. To aid them in overcoming these challenges, the community needs to give the elderly independence so that they can lead a more meaningful life. The Hive 5 is a community centre designed mainly for seniors to interact with each other, rather than just staying home alone. The single-storey architecture allows their ease of movement and independence so they can be socially active and engage with the rest of society. Seniors can also use the space as a creative outlet for botany in the outdoor garden or practise simple sports such as yoga and pickleball. Here, they can have a sense of belonging and feel safe, surrounded by others who share similar experiences in this life stage.
