Conquering Challenges, Achieving Excellence: Temasek Polytechnic honours over 2000 student leaders in co-curricular activities and sports

Battling clinical depression and the loss of a loved one, a student not only maintained academic excellence but also contributed to academic research, co-authoring a research paper during his internship. A national swimming champion with a Southeast Asian Games silver medal, and an environmental crusader relentless in her fight for a greener future – these inspiring individuals were honoured with Temasek Polytechnic’s (TP) highest student accolades at the Temasek Student Excellence Awards (TSEA) 2024.

The TSEA is presented annually to recognise the inspiring achievements and outstanding contributions of students in non-academic areas, such as arts, sports, leadership, service, entrepreneurship, eco efforts and character. One such awardee is Tan Yi Hong, Rick.  He dealt with clinical depression, even experiencing a relapse after the loss of his grandfather. Despite these challenges, Rick made the courageous decision to defer his studies, prioritise his well-being, and ultimately return to complete his diploma with a strong academic standing. He also remained actively involved in the TP Chorale, performing at events like the Voices Festival at the Esplanade.

Demonstrating exceptional athletic prowess is Ardi Zulhilmi Bin Mohamed Azman, a national swimmer. He not only set championship records in the Polytechnic-ITE (POL-ITE) and Institute Varsity-Polytechnic Games (IVP) but also represented Singapore at the 2023 Southeast Asian Games and Asian Games.

On the environmental front, Cheryl Koh Boon Suan champions sustainability initiatives, organising events and projects that empower communities to make sustainable choices and contribute to building a low-carbon future such as tree planting and upcycling. For instance, Cheryl collaborated with the Singapore Fashion Council and Design Orchard to create a 10-metre-long display piece made of recycled plastic bottles and beer caps, demonstrating how common objects can be transformed into extraordinary works of art.

There are more than 2000 recipients for TSEA 2024, including students and coaches. 378 students were awarded the Individual and Group/Team Higher Awards for demonstrating a high level of resilience with outstanding contributions to their sport or craft. Four officially appointed TP coaches also received the Outstanding Coach Award for their contributions.

In addition, these Awards were also conferred to TP students:

  •  CCA Merit Awards (Arts/Sports/Leadership) – 1148
  • Full Colours Awards – 434
  • Half Colours Awards – 118
  • Character Excellence Award – 4

These awardees represent a diverse cohort recognised at TSEA 2024 for their multifaceted achievements. Their dedication to growth, leadership and giving back to the community exemplifies the core values that the TSEA cherishes.
