With the approval of 16 types of insects for human consumption in Singapore, the CNA Explains video features Dr Kalpana Bhaskaran, who answered common questions posed by members of the public from social media.

 

In response to whether Singapore is running out of food and hence turning to insects as a food source, Dr Kalpana shared that insects are not a replacement but an alternative source of protein that is also sustainable. She also added that insects are nutritionally healthy, being a good source of protein, essential amino acids, dietary fiber, and even chitin – a source of prebiotic which helps develop good bacteria in the gut.
