Course Overview

The subject provides an introduction to basic statistical concepts. Topics include descriptive statistics, probability distributions, estimation of population parameter, hypothesis testing, and linear regression.

 

 

Objectives

 

The aims of this subject are to provide students with:

  • Practical knowledge of statistical concepts and techniques to generate information for decision-making.
  • Analytical skills to understand statistical findings.
  • Interpretative skills to use statistical findings for decision making.

Entry Requirements

Applicants applying for modular units which are drawn from existing full diploma or post-diploma programmes will have the same minimum entry requirements as the full qualifications.

What You'll Learn

1. Describe the role of statistics, its applications and the basic statistical terms.

2. Apply graphical and computational methods to describe qualitative and quantitative data.

3. Explain the basic concepts of probability.

4. Apply discrete probability distributions.

5. Apply continuous probability distributions.

6. Apply point and interval estimates.

7. Apply hypothesis testing techniques.

8. Apply simple linear regression analysis.

Certification

 

Upon successful completion of the modular unit, students will be awarded a Statement of Result which can count towards the attainment of the Diploma in Engineering (Operations & Systems Management).
