Course Overview

As businesses increasingly recognise the importance of sustainability and have to comply with the government’s sustainability reporting requirements by 2025, there is a growing demand for professionals who possess both digital skills and knowledge of managing sustainability initiatives. Businesses can also leverage on digital tools to implement sustainable practises and drive environmental and social impact while improving the bottom line. As sustainability is a global trend that reflects the urgent need to save the earth, this diploma can help working professionals stay informed about sustainability trends and practises, hence providing opportunities for personal growth and development.


All students are required to bring their own notebooks for lessons. You may refer to the required technical specifications for notebook HERE.

What You'll Learn

 

Upon graduating from the course, graduates should be able to:

 

  • understand sustainability management concepts and frameworks;
  • use digital tools to analyse sustainability challenges facing organisations and develop strategies to address them;
  • provide practical solutions in financial analysis and reporting for sustainable business practises;
  • communicate effectively through storytelling using visualisation software on sustainability issues and solutions to stakeholders; and
  • integrate digitalisation and sustainability skills to create and innovate sustainable management approaches and solutions.

 

To be awarded the Diploma in Business Practice (Sustainability Management) participants are required to complete a total of 5 modular certificates (MCs). A certificate will be issued upon successful completion of each MC.

BCLM048 Governance, Sustainability & Compliance

This subject will enable students to understand the concepts and importance of regulatory, governance, and compliance frameworks in relation to industry technological advances, key economic drivers, important industrial applications and ESG.

BCPD003 Environmental Sustainability & Ethics

The subject covers sustainability principles, ethical considerations, and the PESTLE model to understand the external environment. The subject focuses on integrating the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) into sustainability strategies. Students will learn to analyse and develop sustainable solutions that align with ethical principles and support the achievement of UNSDGs, equipping them to create sustainable and ethical outcomes in various organisational contexts.

BCBS010 Management & Organisational Behaviour

This subject provides an introduction to the key management functions of planning, organising, leading, and controlling. It addresses the key determinants of human behaviour at the individual, group, and organisational levels. It presents a managerial approach to how organisational performance can be improved through effective management of people in broader social and cultural contexts.

BCLO011 Supply Chain Management & Technology

The subject provides an overview of the relationships between supply chain management and logistics management and their impact on the success of organisations. It focuses on the major functional components in a supply chain and explains how they interact with one another in contributing to the success of a business organisation. The application of technology will also be emphasised, as technology is a key driver of business operations in a sustainable supply chain.

BCBS011 Change Management in Sustainability Transformation

The subject uses the lens of sustainability and organisational change as an anchor to develop a sustainability transformational model for business organisations.  This approach of People, Process and Technology (PPT) framework will be applied to drive the organisation towards the adoption of sustainable practises in business to generate economic, social, and environmental outcomes in the long run.

BCBT002 Business IT & Applications

This subject intends to equip working adults to be competent in using office automating tools. Emphasis is placed on creating hands-on training environment that enables participants to embrace business information technologies to function and contribute effectively in an increasingly technologically driven workplace. Participants will learn how to integrate useful advanced features of spreadsheet and database tools to support business operations.

BCAF015 Introduction to Sustainable Finance

The subject introduces students to sustainable finance products and services, as well as sustainability principles and frameworks to integrate into financial decisions. Students will also learn about emerging trends and developments to gain an understanding of opportunities in sustainable finance.

BCAF016 Introduction to Sustainability Reporting

This subject covers the significance of sustainability reporting, the roles, expectations of key stakeholders, and the guiding principles of the reporting process. It will also introduce prominent global standards like the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standard and cover the processes of preparing and interpreting sustainability reports.

BCAF004 Management Accounting & Finance

This subject introduces key management accounting and finance concepts required by students to make sound business decisions. Students will also learn fundamental management accounting concepts in business planning, decision-making, and cost control. Upon completion, students will become more effective decision-makers and make informed business decisions.

BCMK002 Community & Stakeholder Engagement

This subject equips students with knowledge and skills necessary to engage communities and stakeholders in a meaningful and effective way. It covers topics such as identifying key stakeholders, building relationships with communities and stakeholders, managing conflicts, developing communication plans, and implementing effective engagement strategies, with the aim of building more sustainable and equitable relationships between organisations and the communities they serve.

BCCM005 Sustainability in Media & Communication

This subject explores the vital intersection of sustainability, media, and communication. Students will learn about the role that media and communication play in shaping societal perspectives and values and how sustainability concepts can be integrated into these processes. Throughout the subject, students will also gain an understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with sustainable media and communication, while critically reflecting on their own roles as communicators and media producers.

BCMK003 Sustainability Marketing

This subject explores sustainable marketing practises that can help improve the environment. It exposes students on different approaches to responsibly market their products and services in a way that helps both their business and the planet. Students will learn how to develop marketing strategies that align with their values and communicate their sustainability efforts effectively. They will also gain an understanding of how sustainability can be a source of brand loyalty through developing sustainable and responsible marketing strategies from a practical perspective.

BCPD004 Capstone Project

The subject takes the form of a major project which allows students to apply the skills learned in the previous MCs. Students will integrate sustainability concepts and considerations into real-world projects, from planning and design to implementation and evaluation. Through case studies, industry visits, and industry guest speakers’ series, students will gain hands-on experience and develop skills and knowledge needed to create sustainable outcomes and positive impacts on the organisations, the environment and society.

Modes of Assessment

 

The assessment would be based on a combination of coursework components such as written and practical tests, case studies, assignments, projects, and presentations.

Career Opportunities

This course equips graduates with digital skills as an enabler and knowledge in sustainability management, governance, sustainable finance, and communications engagement. With this, graduates will be able to expand their job roles and embark on a career path related to sustainability.

Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements may be considered for admission to the course based on evidence of at least 2 years of relevant working experience or supporting evidence of competency readiness. Suitable applicants who are shortlisted may have to go through an interview and/or entrance test. The Polytechnic reserves the right to shortlist and admit applicants.
