Law affects all areas of life – A good understanding of the field will give you the edge in meeting the challenges of the working world. We are the only polytechnic in Singapore that prepares working adults for a career in the legal industry.
This course will teach you the theoretical and practical aspects of law while equipping you with a wide variety of skills, such as legal communications, legal research, as well as preparing and drafting contracts and agreements. You will acquire theoretical knowledge across different areas of law, including tort, contract, real property, criminal and family law. Beyond that, you will be equipped with procedural skills such as civil and criminal procedures, conveyancing, and corporate secretarial practice. You will also be trained to run a law office and be introduced to legal technology!
Graduates can look forward to exciting career opportunities such as Paralegals, Legal Secretaries, Law Office Managers and Administrators. Not only will you be highly sought after by law firms, but also by government agencies and legal departments in private companies such as banks, insurance companies and real estate agencies.

BCLM004 | Law of Real Property
This subject covers the basic land law concepts, the land registration systems in Singapore, commercial dealings in land as well as the different types of contracts for the sale of land and the law governing such transactions. |

BCLM005 | Law of Contract
This subject covers the fundamental common law principles of contract law and the relevant statutes. The topics to be covered include the formation of a valid contract and its terms, factors that may vitiate an enforceable contract, performance and discharge of a contract and the remedies available for a breach of contract. The specialised area of Law of Agency will also be looked into. Students will also learn the basic principles of drafting a contract. |

BCLM011 | Company Law
The students will learn about the concepts that define and characterise the company, as well as the structure, ownership and management of the company. They will also look at how a company is run and administered and the various relationships that exist amongst the parties within the company as well as how it deals with external parties. They will also learn how a company raises funds as well as the alternatives available to a company in crisis. |

This subject teaches the legal principles of trusts and the law relating to advance planning which includes succession, wills, lasting powers of attorney, mental capacity, advance medical directives and probate and administration of estates. The subject will equip students with the skills to prepare legal documents pertaining to advance planning. |

BCLM008 | Family Law
This subject will cover the law relating to marriage, divorce, legitimacy, adoption, guardianship, maintenance and custody. Particular attention will be paid to the Women’s Charter and the case law which interprets the law in these areas. |

BCLM006 | Criminal Law
This subject will cover specific provisions of the Penal Code of Singapore. The defences set out in the Penal Code will also be explored and covered. It will also examine offences under other statutes such as the Misuse of Drugs Act, Prevention of Corruption Act, Computer Misuse Act, Immigration Act and the Road Traffic Act. The statutes as well as the case law will be examined in detail. |

BCLM010 | Conveyancing Practice
This subject focuses on the conveyancing procedure relating to the sale and purchase of completed and uncompleted properties. It also includes the use of loans and Central Provident Fund Board savings in the financing of such purchases, and the procedure and security documents relevant to such transactions. Emphasis will also be placed on the drafting of relevant correspondence and of documents required in these transactions for lodgement at the Singapore Land Authority as well as the various types of searches, legal requisitions and requisitions on title. |

BCLM007 | Criminal Procedure
This subject covers the essential aspects of the work involved in criminal procedure from the perspective of the prosecution and the defence. Students will also gain practical knowledge in the drafting of documents needed in criminal matters. |

BCLM040 | Principles of Civil Litigation
The course will cover the litigation process, from the commencement of an action by Writ to enforcement of the judgment. Besides the coverage of substantive legal principles underlying the procedures, the course will also offer hands-on training in the drafting of court documents. |

This subject provides an understanding of basic accounting concepts and processes, and their applications in businesses. It includes the double-entry system of bookkeeping, preparation of financial statements, accounting for cash as well as analysis of financial statements using ratios. It also covers accounting for law firms in accordance with the Solicitors’ Accounts Rules. |

BCLM013 | Company Secretarial Practice
The subject will cover topics such as the functions of the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA), the duties and qualifications of a Company Secretary, procedures for registering a company, procedures for convening different types of meetings, share registration and transfers, registers and statutory records, registration of charges and how to list a company. |

BCLM014 | Management of Law Office & Court Technology
The subject will touch on the following areas namely human resource management, workflow management, office automation, record and document management, the use of IT technology, leadership, organisational politics, marketing and legal ethics. The students will be required to pick up the relevant concepts through lectures, seminar-based workshops, self-directed learning and project work which simulates a live office environment. |
