Course Overview

This course is jointly offered by Rainbow Centre and Temasek Polytechnic.

 

In response to the evolving educational landscape, the need for specialized skills in special needs education has become increasingly vital. This comprehensive diploma course offers a deep dive into areas such as teaching and learning support, behavioural management, and psychological practices, all of which are crucial for fostering inclusive and supportive environments.

 

Throughout this course, learners will gain specialized knowledge and practical skills for supporting individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in educational settings, emphasizing structured teaching and effective behavioural management. Participants learn to create inclusive environments, regulate arousal levels, manage behaviours, and understand neurocognitive theories related to ASD. It also covers family-centric planning, community integration, and collaboration with stakeholders to help individuals with ASD achieve their life goals.

 

Do note that work-based learning sessions will be conducted at Rainbow Centre.

Entry Requirements

Minimum Entry Requirements

 

A Polytechnic Diploma or ITE Technical Diploma/Technical Engineer Diploma/ Work-Learn Technical Diploma or equivalent

 

OR a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent

 

OR a Post-Secondary Certificate with at least 3 Years of relevant working experience

 

Applicants with other equivalent academic qualifications and/or working experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

What You'll Learn

Upon completing the course, graduates should be able to:

 

a. Comprehend autism spectrum disorders, including their characteristics and variations.
b. Acquire effective teaching strategies for individuals with autism
c. Master behaviour management and emotional support techniques.
d. Implement inclusive education practices and engage collaboratively with families, communities, and other professionals in the Special Needs sector.

 

To be awarded the Specialist Diploma in Applied Autism Studies, participants are required to complete a total of 2 modular certificates (PDCs). A certificate will be issued upon successful completion of each PDC.

GPS2039 Teaching & Learning for Individuals with Autism

This module is designed to equip educators with the essential knowledge and skills to effectively support students, particularly those with diverse learning needs, through structured teaching approaches. Participants will learn how to utilise structured teaching elements to create inclusive learning environments and address the individualised needs of students with disabilities.

GPS3304 Behaviour Management Strategies for Individuals with Autism

This module is designed to provide educators with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills to regulate arousal levels and manage behaviours effectively in diverse educational environments. Participants will learn about various strategies for regulating arousal, including sensory and mindfulness approaches, and how to apply these techniques to meet the diverse needs of students. Additionally, participants will gain insights into neurocognitive theories of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and learn to identify and address common challenges in the classroom resulting from neurocognitive differences.

GPS3305 Assessment & Intervention Design for Individuals with Autism

This module is specifically tailored to provide educators with comprehensive understanding and practical skills in conducting assessments and designing interventions for individuals with ASD. Participants will learn to effectively assess students' learning profiles, set individualised objectives, and implement appropriate interventions, all while considering the unique needs of individuals with ASD. Additionally, participants will apply the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and strategies of arousal regulation to create inclusive learning environments for students with autism.

GPS3306 Family-Centric Planning & Community Integration for Individuals with Autism

This module is designed to equip professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to support individuals with ASD through family-centric planning and community integration initiatives. Participants will learn how to integrate person-centred principles into transition planning, understand the needs and emotions of families, and effectively collaborate with stakeholders to support individuals with ASD in achieving their life goals.

Modes of Assessment

 

The assessment will be based on a combination of coursework components, including individual written reports, case studies, and group projects.

 

This assessment plan is structured to ensure that learners effectively achieve relevant competencies through practicum sessions in a special education school. The integration of theory and practice in the course design allows the students to immediately apply their knowledge in the classrooms, as well as other real-world settings (e.g., case studies, practical training).
