Minimum Entry Requirements

 

A Polytechnic Diploma or ITE Technical Diploma / Technical Engineer Diploma / Work-Learn Technical Diploma in Spatial Design-related discipline or equivalent

 

OR A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent

 

OR A Post-Secondary Certificate with at least 3 Years of relevant working experience

This program is suitable for interior design entrepreneur or interior designer aspiring to take on senior role in the company. The course will deepen their skills in the areas of project management, business management, design communication and innovation to advance their career in the interior design sector.

What You'll Learn

Upon successful completion, graduates should be able to:

  • manage interior design projects and work processes;
  • have the know-how to become interior design entrepreneurs;
  • appreciate the benefits of Service Design and understand psychology in design; and develop skills in strategic and operational management in an interior design practice.

 

The proposed course comprises two Post-Diploma Certificates in specific domain areas with a total duration of 240 hours or 16 credit units (CUs).  The course structure is as follows:

Post-Diploma Certificate in Interior Design Professional Practice

The PDC in Interior Design Professional Practice is a comprehensive PDC that integrates principles from Project Management, Interior Design Entrepreneurship and Business Management & Ethics.  It equips students with essential skills for successful project management, entrepreneurial acumen, and effective management of businesses. The PDC combines practical project management methods with insights into market trends and business planning, ensuring students are well-prepared for the multifaceted challenges of the competitive interior design industry. It introduces skillsets required in the setting up of interior design practices.

This subject provides the fundamental principles needed in the project management of interior design projects and introduces objectives, processes, outputs, and deliverables required in the various phases of interior design. The subject covers an overview of resource allocation and best practices employed in the industry today.

DCE050A Interior Design Entrepreneurship

This subject provides the fundamental principles of business that interior design entrepreneurs need to set up a design practice. The subject covers an overview of relevant office management strategies such as different forms of business models, risk and financial management, business plans and legal obligations in the practice of interior design.

DCE053A Business Management & Ethics

This subject provides the fundamental knowledge for ethical and strategic business management of interior design practices.  It covers finance, office and personnel management, as well as ethical and leadership significance. It examines ethical aspects of sustainability and concepts driving the forefront of business practices, and the evolving landscape of digital technology and ethical impact.

Post-Diploma Certificate in Interior Design Business Strategies

The PDC of Interior Design Business Strategies, the PDC synergises principles from Service Design, Brand Communication and Innovation & Technology. The PDC explores strategies to enhance businesses using client and user-centric approaches. Simultaneously, it also explores cutting-edge digital solutions and emerging technologies, fostering a culture of innovation. This integrated approach equips future interior designers with strategic business acumen, branding skills, creative vision, and technological proficiency to navigate the dynamic and evolving industry.  It introduces skillsets beneficial to sustain businesses.

This subject explores the fusion of Service Design in the spatial context to craft user-centric experiences within physical spaces. Utilising a multi-faceted approach to analyse user behaviour and perceptions, opportunities are identified to enhance touchpoints and eliminate the pain points of users and their experience through the spaces.

DCE081A Brand Communication

This subject introduces the fundamental principles needed for the branding, marketing and communication of an interior design practice.  It also introduces branding strategies like brand stories and narratives to represent the brand of an interior design practice, allowing practices to form deeper connections with customers, consistently and effectively at all touchpoints.

DCE054A Innovation & Technology

This subject provides the fundamental knowledge needed for analysing the technological innovation that has the potential to transform the interior design practice. It covers an introduction to current trends and the impact on the interior design industry in Singapore.

The subject also provides exposure to relevant trends from the adjacent design industry and emerging trends in digital technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI), to gain insights into possible pivotal opportunities to enhance value creation by interior design practices.

Modes of Assessment

 

The assessment would be based on a combination of coursework components such as written assignments, quizzes, projects and presentations.
