Course Overview

Singapore’s ambition to phase out Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles and to have all vehicles run on cleaner energy by 2040 were announced in 2020 and 2021. In this aspect, Singapore will need skilled workers in the ensuring such electric vehicles are safe and maintained well for road worthiness. In addition, the adoption of electric vehicles goes beyond that of the skilled worker in maintaining the vehicle, car owners, emergency first responders and even the car insurers need to be equipped with the knowledge to handle the vehicle safely.

In support of Singapore’s vision in adopting electric vehicles, TP conducts training that will meet the needs in green transportation. Along with the certification offered by LTA and WSG - National EV Specialist Safety (NESS) to train working adults, TP intends to go a step further by adopting the training into the curriculum for PET students.

The aims of this course are to equip the participants with knowledge and skills in:

  • describe how Singapore intends to reduce carbon emissions for the transport sector
  • apply protection measures to handle electric vehicles safely
  • perform electric vehicle charging using electric vehicle charging equipment
  • analyse energy storage systems in electric vehicles safely

Who Should Attend

Technician / Maintenance Engineer / Mechanics EV and HEV. Any role that has potential in handling EVs and HEVs.

What You'll Learn

This course introduces participants to electric vehicles in Singapore and energy storage devices are crucial in electric vehicles. Topics include electric vehicles and greenhouse gas emission, electric vehicle working concepts, safety in handling electric vehicles, charging electric vehicles and energy storage.

By the end of the course, participants will gain knowledge and practical hands-on in the following:

  • Identify different types of electric vehicles and the main components of an electric vehicle
  • Describe the differences between internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and electric vehicles
  • Explain the working principles of electric motors and the conversion of direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC) in an electric vehicle
  • Describe the development trend of EVs
  • Explain the future trends in green urban transportation
  • Describe the physiological impact of electric current on human body
  • Define the electrical hazard classification
  • Identify the hazards in electric vehicles
  • Identify the different protection measures in electric vehicles
  • Identify the different charging types for electric vehicles
  • Identify considerations for optimised charging of an electric vehicle
  • Describe how batteries are used in electric vehicles
  • Explain the different types of batteries in an electric vehicle
  • Explain the role of a battery management system (BMS)
  • Describe how BMS protects the user and the vehicle
  • Analyse the components in a high voltage battery module during maintenance
